摘要

The Chi-Chi earthquake triggered by Chelongpu Fault struck middle Taiwan on September 21, 1999 with magnitude 7.3 and depth of hypocenter 10 km. The maximum PGA and PGV recorded was 1.01g and 304 cm/sec. The number of totally collapsed building was 20,815, the number of partially collapsed building was 17,978. This paper points out the reasons for such serious building damage were due to: 1. very high PGA and PGV; 2. bad construction quality; 3. improper structure system. Diagnosis methods for RC buildings using static pushover curve and dynamic shakeover curve are also introduced in this paper.
