The study on the preparation and properties of metal /polymers nanocomposites is one of the hot fields in chemistry and materials science. A facile method to prepare nanocomposites composed of magnetic alloys and polymers have been exploited in this paper. Mono-dispersive poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres in diameters of about 350 nm were prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. Spherical Fe-Ni/PMMA nanocomposites with diameters of 80 nm were firstly obtained in alcohol on a mild condition using hydrazine as reduction agent, which were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) spectroscopy. The results indicated that Fe-Ni alloys have face centered cubic crystal structures, and that the diameter of nanocomposite is smaller than the original PMMA microsphere. IR spectrum of nanocomposite implied that hydrolysis of PMMA had occurred in the course of the reduction. Spherical Fe-Ni/PMMA nanocomposite is a typical soft magnet.
