Industrial Participation in a Nanotechnology User Facility

The United States Department of Energy, Office of Science / Basic Energy Sciences (DOE/BES) is building five nanoscale science research centers, which will operate as user facilities for the international nanoscience community. The creation of these government-funded research centers is intended to accelerate not only scientific discovery but also technology development. To achieve this multi-faceted goal, the opportunities for private-sector involvement in a publicly funded user facility must expand beyond the traditional roles. We report new approaches for industrial involvement at the DOE Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies.
