Impact Protection Design of Ship Collision with Pier of Runyang Bridge

The bridge piers, being obstacles in the busy river traffic, will certainly incur damage to the bridge from collisions of ships. Therefore it is important to work out a reasonable design to protect the piers of the bridge against ship collisions. This paper first introduces the navigation condition at the location of Runyang Bridge. Then it proceeds to analyze the inner and outer mechanisms of a ship-pier collision process. A three-dimensional ship motion equation is given to simulate the collision. The Gerard method is used to compute the force and structure distortion pattern of the ship during the collision. An analytic computer program on the three-dimensional ship collision is used to calculate the impact force for the piers of Runyang Bridge. This paper intends to suggest reasonable protective measures for the piers of Runyang Bridge according to the experimental study.
