ExxonMobil's affiliate, Tonen Chemical Nasu Co. Ltd. (TCN), is developing a film for lithium ion battery (LIB) separators that is expected to significantly improve LIB power and safety performance in hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) applications. It offers the potential to make HEV batteries lighter weight and smaller, thereby contributing to HEV system cost reduction and to improvements in design flexibility and durability. This paper shares preliminary findings of our current LIB separator development activity, as well as expected improvements from our next-generation LIB separator development efforts.
