MULTI-PURPOSE PROJECTILE CONCEPT TO BALANCE THE CONFLICTING REQUIREMENTS FOR PEACE SUPPORT OPERATIONS

Armed forces supported by expensive weapon systems are oftenrendered vulnerable when involved with peace keeping operationsand asymmetric warfare. The challenge is to design ammunition thatis effective against various targets, but with emphasis on minimumcollateral damage. These conflicting requirements are met byfocussing the warhead effect on target. The paper discusses thedesign and evaluation of a multi purpose projectile concept forarmour systems against various targets, including soft targets(personnel), bunkers and light armour. Collateral damage is curbedby reducing the HE content (compared to existing ammunition) andfocussing fragmentation along the line of fire. A multi optionprogrammable time based fuze concept is used to initiate thewarhead in flight at an optimum position relative to the target.
