Seam tracking is essential for producing high quality weldments in robotic welding systems. As computer-based off-line wled job planning systems become more widely applied, the ability to accurately track the seam becomes very important. The reason is that the computer-based planniing system can accuratelyy plan the path for the weldment, but in cannot predict precisely the vagaries of the fit-up and distortion that will occur before and during the welding. AWI successfully demonstrated the concept of using remote seam tracking with a CCD camera.
