A great number of bridge structures have been damaged during the Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake, in January 1995. Steel piers of bridges were not exception, having also suffered damaged from the earthquake. Under such circumstances, researches to improve the seismicity of steel piers were carried out by each of the concerned authorities and, only recently, establishment of some counter-measures has started. Based on these measures, execution of seismic retrofit works on existing steel piers has already initiated.The present paper introduces seismic retrofit for existing steel piers, carried out by the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation (hereafter called MEPC), Tokyo, Japan, focusing on the particular the cases of rectangular steel piers.
