Study about Activated Sintering of Pseudoalloys Based on Tungsten Powder

W-Cu alloy parts are generally produced by the copper infiltration sintering technique; some investigators have researched the effects of VIM group transition metal additions on the sintering of tungsten powders at different temperatures. However, the detailed sintering behaviour of tungsten with addition of group VIM transition elements has not yet been systematically studied, in particular for the case of the liquid phase sintering of tungsten - copper almost solid W-Cu materials. This paper describes a study concerning activated sintering of tungsten, using different metals (Ni, Fe, Co) in a concentration of 1 -4%. The study outlines the design of tungsten-copper composite material, identifies the possible property combinations, and isolates the processing options for specific target applications. In addition the shrinkage and the density variation for each case is presented.
