The request on tooling for powder compaction is becoming increasingly severe due to more complex geometries and higher densities of the components. Less lubricants and higher pressures are being used and failure due to fatigue and galling is becoming more pronounced of the tools. In many cases the tools could actually limit the possibility to develop new sintered parts due to quality and manufacturing problems.A high nitrogen PM alloy has shown to have an excellent adhesive wear/galling resistance due to the introduction of a high amount of a fine distributed (predominately) Vanadium Nitride (VN) phase. The present paper presents new data of nitrogen alloyed steels and case studies of tools used in the mass production of components.
