Terra Nova Design Challenges and Operational Integrity Strategy

The Terra Nova Field is the second oil field developed in the Jeanne D'Arc Basin of the Grand Banks, East Coast of Canada. The field has recoverable reserves of approximately 370 million barrels with an anticipated life of 15 years. The field, located in approximately 94m of water 350km east-southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland, is developed using Canada's first floating production, storage and offloading system.The Terra Nova Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) system is based on a 960,000 bbl storage vessel producing at a rate of 150,000 bopd from four drill centers tied to the FPSO using subsea flowlines and risers.This paper discusses several of the unique design approaches adopted to meet the key challenges encountered in designing and executing the Terra Nova project. These key challenges include: (a) cold environment (e.g. winterization, hydrate management and crude waxing), (b) ice environment (e.g. icebergs and pack ice), (c) the challenge of shallow water depths combined with severe weather conditions, and (d) the challenge posed by the geotechnical/soil conditions at the Terra Nova field.This paper also discusses the operational integrity strategy for the asset. The ongoing integrity of the asset will be assured by implementing effective engineering, maintenance and inspection strategies balanced, with the requirements of production and marine operations in extreme environmental conditions, which poses some unique challenges.
