This investigation studied the relationship between small and intermediate scale calorimeters. Rate of heat release and associated parameters were determined for several wood and plastic materials commonly used in the building industry. A cone calorimeter was specifically constructed for the correlation with the materials tested horizontally at radiant heat fluxes of 25, 35 & 50 kW centre dot m~2. An intermediate scale calorimeter based upon ISO 9705 was then developed utilising a vertical radiant panel heater and a large hood calorimeter. The device enabled vertical analysis of 1m~2 samples allowing the determination of an empirical relationship between the small and intermediate scale results.
