Northern Nevada is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. In responseto the traffic and congestion, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) initiated thedesign and construction of a freeway system that skirts the downtown Carson City, Highway395 area. Phase I of this project is currently under construction. Phases 2A and 2B arecurrently in the design process. The often extreme climate of the Northern Great Basin madeerosion control design difficult and challenging. An unusual variety of erosion controlpractices were used. Initial revegetation work was conducted in April of 2004, followed by ahot dry summer, resulting in little germination but excellent dust control. Additionalrevegetation conducted in the fall of 2004, as well as the previous season’s work, hasbecome well-established with little evidence of erosion across most of the project. This wasin part a result of good design, good implementation, and unusually high precipitationthroughout the winter of 2004 and spring of 2005.
