We used phase matched Third Harmonic Generation to determine the effective nonlinear susceptibilities in Mercury-(I)-Chloride (Calomel) for type-I, type-II and type-III phase matching. Wavelength dependent measurements enabled us to deduce the effective interaction length, which is a limiting parameter for the conversion efficiency. Our measurements demonstrate that Calomel ( 2 2Cl Hg ) is highly nonlinear. Together with its transparency up to the UV this makes it interesting for nonlinear optical devices.
