In Victoria, Australia, a large proportion of the dams engineering exertise has moed from the public to the private sector. Consultants now work with dams managers to provide dam safety services, such as site inspections, assessments, surveillance, emergency planning and staff training. Day to day dam safety tasks can be integrated into he work program of the field personnel employed at the dam, while dams ngineering expertise can be provided by the consultant. Consequently, teamwork becomes a feature of this relationship, the success of which depends on quality of the services and the addoption of strategies to overcome the problems which are inherent in dam safety. One of the benefits of the privatised dam safety services is that the dams engineers have the opportunity of drawing experience from a much wider field than would be available within most dam ovning authorities.
