Time synchronization based on multiplexing RPR channel and IRIG-B time code

For the time synchronization in smart grid, the paper proposes a solution that transmitting IRIG-B time code by multiplexing RPR channel. In the method, we multiplex RPR channel, using the control code in the coding of Ethernet physical layer to represent the rising and falling edges of the pulse signal, to transmit IRIG-B message. The RPR nodes are divided into master nodes and slave nodes. The master nodes are responsible for accessing precise time information and the output of IRIG-B time code, and slave nodes are responsible for receiving the IRIG-B time code and the output of precise time information calculated by using the recovery algorithm. This paper offer the design method based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and simulating test is proceeded by the Modelsim simulation software. The experimental results show that the synchronization scheme achieves the low cost and high precision time synchronization, laying a good foundation for the establishment of wide area measurement and control system in smart grid.
