Abstract: Saturnus is an infrared FEL operating in the 10 $mu@mwavelength region, driven by a compact 20 MeV linacwith a photoinjector, under construction at UCLA. The1.5 cm period, 0.6 $Tau peak field undulator is beingbuilt at the Kurchatov IAE. The FEL is designed tooperate primarily in the self-amplified spontaneousemission mode. This paper covers the start-up fromnoise, optical guiding, saturation, sidebands andsuperradiance, with emphasis on the effects importantfor future short wavelength operation of FELs. Thephotoinjector follows closely the Brookhaven design.Electrons are injected into an accelerating sectionbased on the plane-wave transformer design developed bySwenson at SAIC. Simulation of the linac and FEL show again length of 10 cm, and a saturation power of 50 MW.!
