Usually, Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM) applications have been reserved to only mission-critical equipment and non-monitored devices and required highly trained personnel, due to the high cost and complexity of such systems. With the lower cost and flexibility afforded by PC-based tools, MCM applications are becoming more widespread. The use of the Personal Computer (PC) has also allowed the development and use of new signal analysis algorithms in the time, frequency, order and joint time-frequency domains in an easy and intuitive manner. The vibration monitoring market has shown years of steady growth driven in part by the lower cost and wider availability of tools for real-time data acquisition and signal analysis using standard PCs. This paper will help guide the first time PC-based MCM system developer and/or user through the MCM system design and development process using data acquisition boards and a graphical programming language.
