The NE 85th Street and Redmond Way Corridor Study examined improvements tornincrease transit speed and reliability through the arterial corridor. The project was partrnof region-wide transit enhancements intended to improve bus service. The NE 85thrnStreet and Redmond Way corridor experiences congestion stemming from a lack ofrnregional capacity, growing employment and population bases adjacent to the corridor,rnand a lack of alternative travel corridors. This corridor, also designated as State Routern908, is a five-lane arterial with an interchange with Interstate 405 at the west end of therncorridor. The corridor is situated in the cities of Kirkland and Redmond, Washington,rnUSA, suburbs of Seattle. Several improvements were considered including addingrndedicated bus lanes along the length of the corridor as well as completing individualrnintersection projects. The improvements were evaluated by conventional intersectionrnmeasures of performance, such as average delay and queue length. Benefit-to-costrnratios were used to determine the return on investment by the transit agency of eachrnenhancement alternative. The bus travel time benefits realized from corridor-wide andrncombinations of relatively small intersection improvements were comparable andrnsignificant. Further, the benefit-to-cost ratio for the intersection improvements wasrncomparable and outweighed those of the corridor-wide improvements. The studyrnshowed that in this suburban setting, getting buses moving means getting all of therntraffic moving.
