The traffic signal systems at signalized intersections are complex andrndifficult to analyze due to several factors associated with vehicular traffic andrnsignal controllers. Currently, pre-timed and actuated signal controls are widelyrnused at most signalized intersections. Adaptive signal controls are not widelyrnused due to uncertainties regarding their benefits. This paper investigates thernoptimization and consequential benefits that can be achieved through the use ofrnpre-timed, actuated and adaptive signal controls through a systematic simulationrnstudy. Traffic variables such as signal delays, level of service, volumes,rncapacities, directional mix, mid-block flows, degree of randomness of arrivals andrnturning movements are examined to determine their impact on the potentialrnbenefits. The macroscopic and microscopic simulation models such as Emme/2,rnINTEGRATION, Synchro and Sim-Traffic are used to carry out simulation andrnanalysis for a 3x3 arterial network of 9 intersections. It is concluded that thernoptimization significantly improves the performance of pre-timed, actuated andrnadaptive signal controls, and further that adaptive signal control performs betterrnthan the pre-timed signal control and is comparable or better than the actuatedrnsignal control for the arterial network.
