The authors designed a survey to assess pharmaceutical global practices and preferences linking roller compaction technology and excipients together specifically to pharmaceutical industry best practices and needs. The intent was to determine the status of current roller compaction practices, excipient use, and future industry direction. These results were achieved through vendors soliciting worldwide key pharmaceutical experts. The surveys were conducted anonymously, authors did not know who responded. The survey assessment provides a global yet specific summary of current industrial best practices and preferences for roller compaction technology and excipients used to manufacture drugs worldwide. The results provide a unique perspective about roller compaction technology and excipient usage in year 2000 and direction about future technology needs. Only a few persons answered every survey question. It appears there are only a few persons in the industry, at this time, who link excipient usage, formulation research and development, process optimization, manufacturing benefits, and equipment feature selections to roller-compaction technology. Linkage between both roller-compaction and excipient technologies is not complete in the pharmaceutical industry.
