Testing the Effectiveness of Verbal Working Memory Using Two Display Modalities

This paper investigates how well individuals retrieve information in terms of different display modalities. Prior studies show auditory displays are more effective than visual display displays for tasks demanding verbal working memory s (WM). Participants performed tasks given to them visually or auditorily. Tasks were presented as follows: Audio 3, 5, 7, 9 and Visual 9 steps. After receiving the steps, participants recalled and performed the ta tasks as successfully as sks possible. Results showed no significant difference in performance between display modalities, implying that WM performance is likely to be influenced by the quantity and difficulty of the task rather than display modality.
