The formation and operation of virtual enterprises are gaining momentum as more and more organisations are taking advantages of the developments in technology. It is frequently cited that the developments in, and adoption of technology is outpacing similar advances in the understanding of organisational, structural, managerial and people related issues, such as trust, collaboration and relationship building. The paper reports on several years of research into the human issues of virtual working. It attempts to highlight paradoxes and dilemmas faced by organisations and to try and understand the nature of working relationships between individuals and teams in me formation and operation of virtual enterprises.
