Utility telemetry service allows utility providers to minimizentheir expenses and maximize service quality and competitiveness, usingnpublic switched telephone networks. The newly emerging IEEE standardn1390 defines alert signals for network to telemetry interface, whichnactivate the telemetry interface unit. Since this standard is on anrelatively specific subject, VLSI detectors for the IEEE 1390 signalsnare not widespread on the market. Instead of using optimal detectionnmethods, a detector of these signals is suggested here, based onnsuboptimal detection methods. The analysis has been performed in severalnsteps: (a) mathematical modeling, (b) simulation analysis, and (c)nimplementation analysis. The performed analysis indicates thatnsuboptimal methods offer satisfactory performance, even with anrelatively large quantization noise, which implies lower VLSI complexitynand production cost
