An integrated vision triarchitecture, Vista, for a general-purposecomputer vision system is described. Vista consists of three parallelarchitectures. A fine-grained mesh-connected single-instructionmultiple-data (SIMD) architecture is proposed to minimize thecommunication overhead between processing elements in existingmesh-connected architectures. A medium-grained multiple-instructionmultiple-data (MIMD) architecture is proposed to alleviate thecommunication overhead in loosely coupled multiprocessors and the memorycontention in tightly coupled multiprocessors. A coarse-grained MIMDarchitecture is proposed to reduce the communication and input/output(I/O) overheads in existing hypercube multiprocessors. Thesearchitectures are exploited for low-, intermediate-, and high-levelcomputer vision, respectively. Each architecture shows a performanceimprovement in each class.
