Jane: an integrated development environment for real-time, multimedia, distributed applications

In this paper the potentially of Java and other emerging technologies, like CORBA, in the design and implementation of a development environment for highly portable real-time multimedia applications is investigated. JANE is the result of such investigation activity: an integrated development environment offering a set of basic services to designers and developers of multimedia applications for the Internet/Intranet. The set of services is characterized by a high degree of generality, independence from applications and access uniformity and is mainly identified by four applications, which have been entirely implemented in Java: a multicast sessins announcement and description tool; an audio conference too; a shared board application supporting cooperative work sessions and a prototype of a media on demand application. This paper describes the main characteristics of JANE and reports on the research and testing activities concerned with its realization.
