Spain is developing an important high-speed railway transportation system. In the period 2000-2007 about 41,000 millions euros will be invested. About 6% of the railway network-length corresponds to bridges with a mean cost value of 1250 euros/m~2 of deck surface area. This paper deals with the more relevant criteria that has been used in the design of 9 Km of different types of concrete bridges focusing on the structural types commonly used, structural configurations, post-tensioning design, dynamic behaviour etc. Due to the high cost of railway bridges it is important to optimize materials and labour cost taking into account available construction methods. Even for medium span bridges, analysis of the cost of several alternatives should be recommended Composite steel-concrete bridges are also being introduced in the high speed railway lines in Spain. One of the first composite bridges is presented in this paper.
