HSL Railway Bridges in the Netherlands

The subject of this paper is the dynamic behaviour of (railway) bridges in a high speed line (HSL) due to passing trains. To keep the maximum vertical acceleration of the bridges and trains below acceptable limits it appears that the bending stiffness of the bridges has to be chosen relatively high in many cases. Because of the costs involved in a stiffer design, the prediction of the maximum vertical acceleration of these bridges and trains plays an important role in the design of the HSL bridges. The results of three models: A travelling load model, a travelling mass model and a FEM model are compared. Some results are given. The HSL bridge over the Hollandsch Diep in the Netherlands is dealt with in more detail. As for that bridge the comfort of passengers appears a decisive factor in the design.
