Architecture and Schema Development for Filtering in Training Environments

To enable efficient training, it is often necessary to limit the display of information provided during Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) training events for the individual participants. The reasons for this information reduction can be of a technical nature, e.g. the limited display capability of a legacy simulator system, as well as of cognitive nature, e.g. to focus on the training objective or avoid the display of distracting information for new trainees. To assist in this problem, this paper describes the architecture and schema development efforts in support of developing a Training Aware Common Operational Picture (TACOP). It utilizes ideas from HLA's Data Distribution Management and earlier work on web-based interest management to filter LVC information. The paper describes possible conceptual architecture approaches using multiple filters and presents the selected solution for the prototypical implementation. Implementation of the solution, which uses one filter that can be configured using XML configuration or the tool DROOLS, is discussed.
