EXPLORING THE DETERMINANTS OF THE PROVISION OF QUALITYNURSING CARE

The purpose of this paper is to present partial results of a model examining theimpact of psychosocial work factors on nurses’ perceptions of the quality of patientcare they are able to provide. Psychosocial work factor variables characterizing thework environment were selected as predictors in the model. The independentvariables were job demands, role conflict, task control, resource control, socialsupport, and supervisory support. The dependent variable was a developed measureof perceived quality of care, with items assessing the technical and interpersonalaspects of providing quality care. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data wascollected from 120 at a pediatric academic hospital. Results indicate that socialsupport provides a key contribution to nurses’ perceptions of quality of care.
