although numerical methods used in varius strucural analysis packages have proven to be effective and reasonably accurate, the massive volume of results that is generated eventually limits the researcher's capacity for processing and interpreting the data. For this reason, there exists a need to develop practical methods for interactively visualizing large, time dependent structural response data sets. Thsi paper introduces a unique method of rendering large structural (and similar) data sets without creating a memory burden to the coreespondign visualization packages. The method involves not only integrating the CAD modeling aspect of CSM applications with the finite element mesh (FEM) generation process, but also re-mapping the FEM results back to the original CAD model. a customized routine reads both the CAD model and the parameter file, automatically refines the CAD geometry, maps the parameter data onto the refined geometry, and writes the FEM file to be used by a structural analysis code. The structural response data is then superimposed back to the original coarse (mobile) CAD model. Hence, a large scale structural response data set may be translated to a mobile CAD model for visualization, virtual simulation, etc. The process does not affect the accuracy of the solutions because only the critical values of each refined element will be mapped back to the parent element.
