This paper describes an academic programme delivered by arnBritish University in Nigeria for the Shell PetroleumrnDevelopment Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC),MedicalrnDivision. The programme was designed to specification to meetrnthe need of the Medical division to deliver a quality healthcarernservice to company employees and their families, and was arnmajor aspect of a five year strategic training and developmentrninitiative agreed by SPDC.rnThe programme was structured and delivered in a way whichrnenabled participants to achieve at academihieve at academicrnlevel 2 which is the second year level of a degree programmernwithin University. The participants were Nurses and Midwivesrnwho had received little or no education or development sincernqualifying. Most participants had been educated andrnprofessionally qualified at certificate level only, and thereforernpractised at this level. The planned outcomes for the programmernwere to raise the education level ofts knowledge and practice, rnand therefore their health care delivery to diploma level. Thusrnenhancing the health care and provision for patients and clientsrnThe paper will discuss the financial implications of deliveringrnthis type of programme in some detail. It will compare the costrnand value to the company of purchasing a programme which isrndelivered in the participants real work environment with anrnequivalent programme delivered at the University in the UnitedrnKingdom for another group of company participants from thernMedical division who were funded for overseas training byrnSPDC. The benefits accrued to the company in terms of bothrnfinancial savings and the “value added” aspects of delivering thernprogramme in Nigeria will be identified and explored. Thernissues of how adults learn most effectively, how the participants’rndevelopment can be maintained and plans for futurerndevelopment will be explored.
