Information Technology: A Way Ahead

The growing uncertainty, rapidly falling job opportunities, lack of focus, even arncertain degree of disenchantment and a very obvious shift to even lower levelsrnand functionality of job profiles are the characteristics of present IT scenario thernworld over. The situation in India is even more perturbed with many companiesrnclosing down, down sizing, shifting to lower levels of skill sets, significantrnreduction in expansion of established companies and dramatic reduction inrnopening of newer companies. While the customer confidence is poor everywhere,rnthe public confidence is at its lowest. This is best represented by a very largernpercentage (about 30%) of seats in IT and related courses falling vacant inrnSouthern States. The purpose of this paper is two fold: One is to articulate thernview point that the situation is not bad, in the sense that it is a "good thing" thatrnis happening and Second; the perception of what we can do (at last) to set somernof the basics right. A major portion of the idea and issues addressed were donernby us or explored by us in the last six years.
