Mobility is the new buzzword in the business world and over time expectations have risen about exactly what this means. In the late eighties and nineties mobility was associated to the ever reachable salesman on his cell phone. A definition for today's world might be 'the ability to access information and services anytime anyhow and anywhere'. This has become a reality by the much spoken of 'wireless technology'. A very new child to the family of wireless technologies is the Bluetooth, which is designed to provide a common way to connect mobile devices such as PDAs, laptops and mobile phones. Thus, this brings in harmony and unity among all devices.rnBluetooth is formed from many other previous technologies. It helps in the transfer of packets between any two or more devices with its chip embedded in them. It provides a connection oriented or connectionless link between devices and promotes a serial or parallel transmission between them. Data is sent in the form of packets which are divided into many parts each performing a function. Protocols are needed for transmitting the packets.rnThe Bluetooth special interest group (SIG), apart from creating its own protocol, adopts the protocols already in existence. There are profiles where if devices from different manufactures conform to the same Bluetooth SIG profile specification, they can interoperate when used for a particular service.rnBluetooth security systems are present where the data get transmitted to the authorized device, after which authentication and encryption if required is done.rnThus Bluetooth, though in its development stage, has a large number of applications for our day today lives, drawing comfort to our way of living.
