Policy Translation and Reconciliation Techniques for the System-of-Systems Domain

The system-of-systems domain has been actively researched for over a decade. These complex systems are proliferating throughout society thanks to both the widespread adoption of the Internet and the vast increase in Internet connectivity in recent years. However, problems exist in the ability to automatically enable consistent security among the systems making up these systems-of-systems. Existing reconciliation algorithms can reconcile policies represented in one language, whilst the number of different languages used to represent these policies is large. Further, no suitable methods or technologies exist that enable the automatic translation of security policies so they can be represented using the same structure. This paper introduces the system-of-systems domain. We conduct a review of existing state-of-the-art methods for the translation and reconciliation of security policies. We discuss the solutions to the problems we identify and discuss their impact on the systems-of-systems domain and security therein.
