The Idaho Closure Project (ICP) at the U. S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratoryrn(INL) is investigating potential treatment methods for the waste buried at the SubsurfacernDisposal Area, a radioactive landfill that is part of the Radioactive Waste Management Complexrn(RWMC). The wastes include a variety of sludges, debris, and nitrate salts, contaminated withrnhazardous chemicals and transuranic (TRU) and non-TRU radionuclides. Alternatives underrnconsideration include in situ thermal desorption (ISTD), in situ grouting (ISG), and ex- siturngrouting (ESG). The investigations involve literature searches and bench- and engineering-scalerntests to determine the feasibility and applicability of the candidate treatment methods.rnResearchers have used both surrogate and retrieved waste in recent testing. The retrieved wastesrnwere nitrate salts from Pad A and TRU sludge from composite samples collected during thernGlovebox Extractor Method Project at Pit 9.rnProject personnel have collected information from previously performed ISV testing, but did notrnperform any additional ISV testing. Reactivity and thermal desorption tests have filled in gaps inrnsupport of in situ thermal desorption. At the same time, compressive strength, porosity,rnhydraulic conductivity, and leachability tests have generated data to assess the feasibility ofrngrouting the SDA waste. Additional tests will be performed in fiscal year 2005. This paperrnsummarizes the fiscal year 2004 testing and results.
