The rebuilding of San Piero a Grado bell tower

摘要

Toward the end of the second World War, many towers have been destroyed in Italyrnbecause of their possible use as points of sight; among them, the bell tower of the church of S. Piero arnGrado, in Tuscany. During the years following the war the Italian government allocated some funds to thernreconstruction of the tower, but the discovery of archaeological remains of previous warship structuresrnstopped the works. A great pressure has been recently exerted by the public opinion to re-start the reconstruction,rnintended not only as a rebuilding of the medieval bell tower, but also as a sort of "restoration"rnof the landscape. The geotechnical aspects of the design are reported in the paper, starting from the choicernof rebuilding the tower with the same materials and techniques of medieval masons, up to the recoveryrnthe original masonry foundation
