In the town centre of Clermont-Ferrand, the realization of a large building complex withrn8/9 levels on 2 basement levels and a footprint of over 11 000 m2 required the execution of works with arncomplex infra-structure. The particular geology and hydrogeology related to the presence and the fillingrnof an ancient volcano has forced the designers to adopt very specific constructive solutions. The constructivernenvironment they wanted to keep, forced the designers to adapt these solutions even more preciselyrnand especially their implementation. The buildings with 3 to 7 levels in the neighbourhood situatedrnbetween 5 and 15 m from the Project north and west of the site were primarily based on shallow foundationsrnanchored at 2 m depth in the area of the water layer in a ‘travertinised’ silt. South of a mall typernconstruction on the ground floor and topped by residential buildings with five levels is based, through arnbasement, on a raft of floating piles of 10 m deep. East of the site is situated near the tramway on pneumaticsrnand powered by rails guided by the soil. All these works have been equipped with instrumentationrnfor monitoring and controlling the stability and deformation during all phases of implementation of therninfrastructure works, banking and construction of the super-structure. At the start of the works severalrnfloor tests were needed to confirm the requested preferential demanding and to control the inter-actionsrnwith existing structures.
