The case of the Arrephorion on the Athenian Acropolis is a characteristic example of a rescue intervention using the method of reburial. The main reason the backfilling of the Arrephorion was considered necessary was the continuous degradation of its remains from the physical and chemical action of the environment. It was decided that the most suitable method of backfilling in this case was to introduce reinforced soil. With this method the Restoration Principles according to the Chart of Venice are met, while minimal horizontal thrust on the foundation walls and the part of the Circuit Wall in contact and constant physiochemical conditions are assured. The method of backfilling has been very successful as shown from the systematic monitoring of its performance, after 6 years of its completion. The reburial performance is also verified through rigorous 2-D pseudostatic elastoplastic analyses with soil-structure interaction.
