Abstract: Pulsed UV and mid-IR lasers have a great potential in various medical disciplines for precise and sparing tissue removal. Beside the study of special applications, the investigation of the underlying ablation mechanisms has become of increasing importance. This paper summarizes the basic models to describe the ablation efficiency and discusses applications as well as limitations.!21
