DNA lesions are capable to change the ways how cells normally function; resulting consequences are cell death, mutation, misdifferentiation and unlimited proliferation or metastatic potential. Hence, nature has evolved mechanisms to minimize damage: DNA repair deals with the mechanisms invoved in avoidance (error free) and/or fixation of genetic mutations (error-prone). The potentially pathogenic consequence of genotoxic exposure includes somatically acquired alterations sometimes provoked by inherited deficiencies. According to various DNA damages, which were induced up to a certain extent by radiation of distinct quality, multiple repair mechanisms have been evolved, but all mechanisms involve the processes of lesion recognition followed by withdrawal or modification of the damaged site.
