Recently, there has been an increasing requirement to develop a new type of roadside guard fences to improve their capacities required due to the increases of the traffic speed, the large-scale vehicles and heavy trucks, and the height of the center of gravity of trucks. However, it is very difficult to test the performances of full-scale guard fences in the field because of the huge consumption in time and cost. In this study, finite element models are developed for both the traucks and the guard fences to reenact their behaviors. The feasibility of these models is demonstrated in an experimental case of collisions of the heavy truck with guard fences, and good agreements are obtained.
