This paper reviews the different current approaches on the construction of this type of dam, classifying them into two different groups: the ones that isolate the structural function from that of impermeability, and the ones that assign both functions to the same material. Among the first ones, the use of geomem-branes is the most prevalent solution. Among the second ones, the crucial point and most disputed topic is the maximum delay for covering one layer with the next. For some, this period is at the beginning of setting. Others, more lenient, accept longer periods. Examples of combined approaches are also analysed. This paper includes numerous data relating to the performance and behaviour of the different methods resulting from many executions, assessed from the viewpoint of achieved permeability.
