As a novel type of reactor with gas and solids moving in the direction of gravity the so-called downer is discussed in the literature. It is postulated that a narrow residence time distribution for gas and solids and a flow regime close to plug flow may be established with this kind of reactor. The gas-solids-distributor at the top of the tube reactor is of major importance for the realization of this reactor and might have influence on the hydrodynamics in the reactor. An injector-type distributor has been developed and its influence on the development of the flow has been studied experimentally.
