A decision support system for the control and replacement of water meters in the city of Athens

This paper describes an effort made by the Athens' Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP), towards the reduction of the apparent water losses from the distribution system of Athens. EYDAP is responsible for the installation and maintenance of more than 1.800.000 water meters of various types and sizes. Considering that the meters typically under-record as they age, it is likely that a considerable proportion of unaccounted-for water is explained by metering errors. Following a preliminary statistic analysis, it was decided to develop a Decision Support System for the control and replacement of all water meters in the city of Athens. The steps of the undergoing project are described in detail and thus useful information to practitioners and organisations facing similar problems elsewhere are given.
