Physical separation of marine sediments into fractions has been studied in lab-scale and pilot-scale. The results from the laboratory study showed that the distribution of the pollutant in the various particle size fractions of the sediments was not a function of the particles surface area. The total mass of the various fractions, the organic content, and the origin of the particles before accumulation in the sediments, seem to be of importance to the distribution of the pollutants. The content of total PAH and high chlorinated PCB-congeners was highest in the fraction >60 μm, while the content of other contaminants analysed was evenly distributed in the particle size fractions. The sediments can be fractioned by centrifugation. The distribution of dry solids between concentrate and centrate can be adjusted by changes in the operational parameters, in particular the G value.
