Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are inducing significant changes on the operations and configurations of manufacturing organisations. Agent technology offers significant capabilities that will allow manufacturing organisations to respond to these changes timely and at minimum cost. This paper presents a generic approach for the dynamic reconfiguration, simulation and control of manufacturing systems. The approach involves modelling manufacturing systems using multi-agents and generating alternative system configurations dynamically from the interactions that take place within the multi-agent systems, simulating and controlling the generated configurations using agents.
