A means of correcting for the effects of atmospheric aerosols in remote sensing data throughrnpolarimetric measurements is described. This technique allows radiance measurements sensed byrninstrumentation to be corrected to yield scene reflectance data; an important process for accuraternremote spectroradiometric sensing. Radiance measurements made by downlooking sensors arerntraditionally corrected for the effects of the intervening atmospheric path by post-processing of therndata using standard computer atmospheric software models. These models provide goodrncorrection for atmospheric constituents, but cannot account for unknown aerosol particulatesrnwithout in situ groundtruth measurements of incident illumination made at the same time.rnTheoretical analysis ofinflight polarimetric correction is presented, and validation is provided byrndata from our suite of polarimeter and advanced imaging-spectrometer instruments flown in tandemrnaboard a light aircraft. Reflectance spectra from ground targets are thus derived in near real-timernby remote sensing equipment measuring up-welling radiance information.
