This paper deals with the design of hybrid architectures, i.e., merging two different mobility concepts: ad hoc and cellular. It presents the architecture and briefly reviews some solutions proposed in order to extend the last hop of a wireless LAN with an ad hoc network. The goals are to provide ad hoc connectivity beyond the range of fixed and cellular infrastructures, to integrate ad hoc networks into the hierarchical Internet and to support the migration of mobile nodes from the Internet into and out of ad hoc networks. The paper tackles the issues that arise from the merging of the different mobility protocols and proposes several solutions.
