Motor spindles play a decisive role in finishing accuracy. The continually higher demands on finishing accuracy of machine tools require steps for the direct measurement of displacements and their compensation. Displacements between rotor andstator constitute a significant portion. The Fraunhofer IWU developed together with FAG Aircraft/ Super Precision Bearings GmbH a measuring principle which allows the measurement of displacements by contactless sensors. The measurement system based on this principle can be integrated in the spindle housing and due to its operating principle and size it has no influence on the spindle's real properties or their static and dynamic stiffness.The paper describes the measurement principle and the construction of the device. Selected test results of the system as for measuring centrifugal and cutting forces as for milling operations are presented.
